Besides the love, the most important part of the wedding...

The photography!

Ah yes, still momentary captures of priceless moments. I deem this the most crucial aspect of the wedding.

How on earth do you pick a photographer though? Nearly everyone out there has a camera these days, and anyone can claim to be able to take excellent photos. Yes, looking through a portfolio helps...but let's be honest, it takes a lot more than that. Oh and then there's style. Oh and then there's the personality and comfort factor.

Little did I know there is even more than that! There's your own style, your own personality, your own comfort...AHHHH!

So let the search begin. Find people online...follow blogs...get inspiration...

My search began in Monterey...via google.

Now, if you've never used google before (HAHA)...let me tell you, typing in 'Photographer' or 'Wedding Photographer' or 'Wedding Photographer Monterey'...doesn't really help. Some of the results I got didn't really spark my curiosity...

One of the first pages I came to, was for Amie Morgan Photography

This is just a little example of detailed shots I so love. So sweet, so unassuming. I really liked most of Ami's style, but wasn't really sold on the menu of prices and even though detailed, I didn't feel connected to her by her website. Does that make ANY kind of sense?

Then someone mentioned I should use the photographer I used for my senior photos. Anyone from Salinas will recognize the name, Ken Cook. Hmm, let me check that out actually. Ken is famous in the area for his portraits. I love his portraits, but let's be honest...my style has changed, let's see if he has moved in my direction more through the years...

Hmm, still an excellent portrait artist...not really my style though.

I wanted something edgy...something artsy, something that would show our personalities. Photographers that would listen, meld their style to mesh with ours. Someone that would make the dude comfortable. Someone that could go with the flow.

Finding a photographer was number one on my list. It's the first thing we did after we put a deposit on our venue. We interviewed just one photography team...and it was kismet. But how do people do this? Had we not gotten a personal referral and seen them in action I don't know what I would have done.

I was thinking about a photographer in Oakland even. Ahhh, the logistic plans were making me so excited! I looooove logistics! But seriously? Do I want to play the logistics game on my wedding day?

I mean, I'm not getting paid to love logistics on my wedding day. I wanted someone that was going to make this a painless process.

But seriously, look at the photos from Oakland based photographer, Steep Street!

So fun, so full of personality...so random! I love it. Just look at their blog...I mean...Gah!

Can you believe we ended up with photographers better than all of these (ok ok ok, in my opinion...but shouldn't it be that way in my head?)

How did you pick your wedding photographer? Luck? Recommendation? Did you throw a dart at the phone book?

  1. Threw a dart at the phone book...12 times until I could find someone available on new Year's Eve...with 47 days notice. ;) The professional photos were fine, but the best ones (the ones that I had enlarged and framed) were taken with my Kodak Easy Share by our limo driver for free!!! :)
