The word fiance makes my skin crawl. Is there a more snooty word than fiance? I think not.
For the record, however horrible, I highly enjoy the other F word (forgive me).
Don't get me wrong, I love HAVING one for the time being...but I will not call the dude by that horrible F word...and I studied French. Trust me, there are better words created by that country.
For example, croissant.
What about a la mode?
What absolutely magnificent additions to our language! But seriously, we speak English...we have huge books dedicated to words and their meanings. Last I checked, even the word 'ain't' is in there...yet we can't come up with a better term for our engaged counterpart. Seriously? Yale...Harvard...Stanford? Anyone? Merriam-Webster? If rappers can create these bizarre words why haven't we found a replacement for the French 'fiance'?
Listen to how it sounds in this episode of Seinfeld. (You have to click the link since the creator disabled embedding...bummer).
Needless to say. I don't like the word 'fiance'

I think we need to work on this word. I prefer 'the dude' for now. This may not work for everyone...but it works for me...for now. But I wouldn't mind starting a trend over the next six months that I still have the opportunity to use the new word.
Thank goodness we have 'husband' and 'wife'. Can you imagine calling your significant other 'Ecouter'?
Do you know what that word even looks like? I'm sure you do.
This...is a dude, a great dude. NOT a fiance.

Personally, I have no issue with the word itself, but I do have an issue with all the titles in general. I've always felt awkward calling someone my "boyfriend", "fiance" or "husband". I think it's just because those words are SO generic & used so flippantly.
ReplyDelete"Husband" doesn't really mean shit anymore in society except "dude who I'm currently living with & protects me at night from the bad guys". This is why I refer to mine as My Sailor, Husbando or Hubba Bubba (hubba came from my loathe of the word "hubby", but in need of some short form of reference of who I was talking about). I know, they're silly, but they hold a lot more meaning to ME, which makes me feel completely comfortable saying them.
Just wanted to add, Kyle & I both have issues with "I love you", for the same reason of being absolutely generic that I mentioned above.
ReplyDeleteWe still say it to each other (of course), but when we have moments that it really does feel beyond "I love you", we made up our own phrase for that. It's not even a real word, but when either of us says it to each other, we totally know what the other is trying to say since "I love you" is completely inferior in that moment.
And now that I read all this back.. I've got issues in the head, lol!
I hate the word to girl so you aren't alone. I think it's snobby.....yuck! I told Brian that if he ever pops the question that he will be my boyfriend until we are married....lol :) PS I love you bloggy!!!
ReplyDeletePersonally, I think fiance sounds better than, say, betrothed. Do you really want to say, "let me introduce you to my betrothed." ick. Betrothed sounds like something you have done while being sick. That being said, I was happy to call Vinnie my fiance. And I have to agree with Kristen on hubby. ugh. That is just about as annoying to me as people saying they are prego (which would be spaghetti sauce, if you ask me) or preggers. gah..disgusting. Not that I want to call Vinnie mi esposo, as we don't speak Spanish (or regularly anyway ;) so I am happy to simply call him my husband, partner in crime, or my best friend.
ReplyDeleteOk, well, the post that says it's from Vinnie, is actually from me, Steph. Apparently Vinnie was logged into google and I was not aware and blogger isn't letting me change it. ahh well.
ReplyDeleteI cant get my mind off that pie oh my how I would love to eat that!!!
