Let's talk themes

Martha. Martha Martha Martha. You...are a wedding genius.

I am unlike most girls out there. I don't like flowers. I don't like getting flowers, I don't like buying flowers, I don't water flowers...or plants. Why does a wedding instantly have people asking "ooooh, what about the flowers?"

To be honest, I can't even wrap my head around CARRYING flowers down the aisle, let alone decorating with them. Besides my extreme distaste for flowers...they're expensive. And...they die.

So long before I had gotten engaged I would wonder to myself...how exactly am I going to decorate since every idea thrown in your face has to do with flowers?

And then...there she was.

Martha Stewart to the rescue. She did a spread on a desert themed wedding. Oh em gee. I instantly fell in love. I could see it now...a lush garden (hello Old Whaling Station) and minimal cactus/succulent centerpieces with pillar candles. That was it. The second I saw this picture my theme came together.

All of a sudden I saw a perfect way to blend my style with the dudes style. He's modern, and I like heavy vintage/antique type furnishings. I like things to look lush, he likes the minimalist approach. I fell in love. Our whole wedding is coming together to be quite a collaboration, and I can't imagine it another way.

The green of the cactus instantly became the green of our wedding. One color does not a wedding make though (ok ok, no colors MAKE a wedding, they just make it look cool!). So what second color shall we pursue? Well, since green is the dudes favorite color, why not compromise and go with my own personal favorite...GRAY. Oh how perfectly complimentary! Green and Gray it is. Green Gray...and Sand. Simply juxtaposed perfection of vintage modern delight.

As soon as I fell for this, I kind of ran with a whole juxtaposed theme for the entire wedding.

A wedding by the ocean? Down home mexican food for dinner.
A wedding in a garden by the ocean? Desert theme within the gates

Everything at the wedding is meant to pull you (even if subconsciously) in a different direction than what you would assume. I kind of like that.

So there you have it. Our theme and how it came to be.

How did you come up with your theme?

Next time...the themes that I thought would be, but never were.

  1. I love this idea! I am also a NON-flower girl. I think it is ridiculous to waste money on something that will die in a week...especially as a token to represent undying love. It just doesn't make sense! Cacti are a way better representation of undying love...they can survive nearly anything!

I forgot all about flowers until three days before my wedding. Haha. I went to Flower Magik in Salinas on Thursday and was like, "I'm getting married on Saturday, can you make some bouquets and boutonnieres for me?"
